“While the fault and the earthquake epicenter are often deep below the earth’s surface, the ground above the fault moves a little too. This movement is very slight, but it is possible to measure it with high precision GPS instruments, or with satellites.”
“ESA makes freely available to the scientific community a dataset of SAR products (Envisat and ERS) corresponding to the earthquake of L’Aquila (Italy) which took place on 6 April 2009. The ESA package also includes data from Third Party missions, in particular Japanese ALOS data.”"
Abstract:We identify a process of global pattern formation that causes regions to differentiate by culture. Violence arises at boundaries between regions that are not sufficiently well defined. We model cultural differentiation as a separation of groups whose membersprefer similar neighbors, with a characteristic group size at which violence occurs. Application of this model of the former Yugoslavia and to India accurately predicts the locations of reported conflict to the area. This model also points to imposed mixing or boundary clarification as mechanisms for promoting peace.
“The Boeing/Sikorsky RAH-66 Comanche was an advanced U.S. Army military helicopter intended for the armed-reconnaissance role, incorporating stealth techniques. Also, it was to designate targets for the AH-64 Apache.
If I had to buy a phone now, I would wait at least until Sept 23 for the official presentation of the HTC Dream. Then, on October 20 we could buy it in US stores (and probably one month later in Europe). Finally (after more than 1 year hype & rumors) we are going to appreciate the first Google-Phone based on the “Android” operating system. This guy is also supposed to become the IPhone killer device. (I trust the google guys and I know they will kill it !
I like the embedded full qwerty keyboard and the touch screen. I am just a little disappointed for the camera (3Mpx only, no Carl Zeiss optics like my Nokia N95). Some other features like GPS are still disputed (!). Here is a video showing also the Google Street View on the HTC Dream.
Price should be around 200 $ + contract (with T-Mobile in the US).
Plastic Logic is a spin-off company from Cambridge University’sCavendish Laboratory, and is a pioneer in polymer transistors and electronics. Production of the Plastic Logic Reader should start this year in Dresden, Germany.
Dramatic plumes, both large and small, spray water ice out from many locations along the famed 'tiger stripes' near the south pole of Saturn's moon Enceladus. The tiger stripes are fissures that spray icy particles, water vapor and organic compounds. This mosaic was created from two high-resolution images that were captured by the narrow-angle camera when NASA's Cassini spacecraft flew past Enceladus and through the jets on Nov. 21, 2009. Imaging the jets over time will allow Cassini scientists to study the consistency of their activity. Image Credit: NASA/JPL/Space Science Institute Read More

BelfSleby: Wow - very awesome subject. I am goin to write about it too!!
sandrar: Hi! I was surfing and found your blog post… nice! I love your blog. Cheers! Sandra. R.
Klystron: No, I didn’t. Perhaps you’re right and more details are given elsewhere. I just would have appreciated just a little more explanation also in that article. Probably because I’m always slightly more interested in methods than in results… :o)
Massimo: About the methods… have you tried to track other publications by the same authors? probably they gave away some technicalities in other and more specialistic journals. Applying the model to only two scenarios doesn’t mean much, although it can be an interesting exercise. It would be interesting to know what results they got for Palestine, Rwanda, Sudan, etc etc…...
