This Saturday we are especting a tremendously exciting 100m final at the Olympic Games in Beijing. [if you already look suspicious and wanna discuss about doping, please refer to the previous thread]. Look at this video, it’s stirring.
These guys (+ a third one) came to Beijing to fight each other, all of them capable of scoring the 100 m world record. You don’t know them yet ? Here they are:
-Usain Bolt, Jamaica, 1986 (yes this guy is only 22 years old!!! - paura!!!). His best performance is the current world record: 9.72 s made two months ago in New York. Here’s the video.
-Asafa Powel, Jamaica 1982. Best performance 9.74 s. Quite unlucky guy, he is missing an important medal despite the fact he run several times with outstanding results, scoring 3 times the world record. Quite recently he was able to perform in a single day 9.74 + 9.78 windy in Rieti, Italy (-> video).
-Tayson Gay, USA, 1982. This guy performed in the fastetst ever 100m in 9.68 s(->Â video ) , but with an unfair +4.1m/s wind. He made it during the US-Trials (where he then got injured during the 200m qualifications, but he seems to have recovered well). His best official performance is a nice 9.77 s.
Who is going to win? big question. I hope Powell, because he really deserves it, but he rarely performed good in face-to-face competitions. So I think Bolt or Gay are more likely to win. Let´s see, the qualifications start tomorrow, the final is on Saturday 2-4 pm in Europe (8-10 pm in Beijing)
But my mind goes now to the legendary 100m final of Tokio ‘91 (-> video) , with 6/8 of the finalists below 10s: “the deepest 100 metres race ever” (Wikipedia), won by Carl Lewis.
BTW, you know that Lewis was able to score a windy 9.78 in 1988? (->video) [you can think what you want about the doping issue of Carl, well in my humble opinion I just think you cannot dope "style perfection" - which nowadays athletes are simply missing...]
